Division 3 Hockey 2016 Review

Your Division 3 Hockey Team at Indiana University closed the first semester, finishing the first half of the season with a historic 13-3-1 record, the best in program history. The boys come in ranked #9 in the North Division ACHA Rankings, and currently ranked 16th in the nation by MyHockeyRankings.

The team closed out impressive wins, sweeping Saginaw Valley State University, beating Central Michigan University, and splitting a weekend versus University of Michigan – Flint. Competing with the toughest schedule to date, Team President Ben Seinfeld says, “I am very proud of the program and how the season is progressing. We knew coming in we had a talented squad. It’s great being out there with the boys and seeing our potential being realized. We have the possibility to really shake up the ACHA and put Division 3 Hockey at Indiana University on the map.”

The squad is prided on its depth, having 9 players over 10 points halfway through the season. Freshman Forward, Sam Markwood, is the top points scorer, racking up 23 points from 12 goals and 11 assists. He is closely trailed by two more freshman, Brendon Block and Joey Bolger, each with 18 points.

Between the pipes, the Division 3 Hockey Team at Indiana University relies on its self-proclaimed “three-headed goalie attack,” from Junior goalie Ben Seinfeld, and Sophomore tendies Connor Minnick and Matt Turner. Each goalie has held their own in the net, with the help of Alternate Captain, James Young, and his defensive crew.

The team looks to close next semester on a high, with notable games versus Grand Valley State University, Indiana Tech, and Purdue University. Team Captain Bryan Mooney says the boys are up for the challenge, as he states, “obviously it’s going to be a difficult start to the semester playing two ranked teams the first weekend back, but I have no doubt that we will rise to the challenge like we have done all of first semester. I think our team enjoys playing in the big games and wants to show that we belong in the top of our division and even the nation. The two Purdue games at the end of the year will also be a strong test to get a sense for the ICHC Tournament not too long after. It’s looking like an important semester for us in terms of how we end up in the rankings.”

With the next rankings set to come out on January 27th, the program will be in prime position for a regional and national push. As Seinfeld said, “this is our year. The boys are competing with the mindset and mentality needed to succeed. We set our goals at regionals and nationals. We will see you there.”
