Pink the Rink
Every year, more than 150 women and men are treated for breast cancer at IU Health Bloomington, and many more are treated for other forms of cancer. Fortunately, the IU Health Olcott Center is there to help these fellow Hoosiers.
IU Hockey is honored to work with the IU Health Olcott Center and Bloomington Hospital Foundation to put on the second annual Pink the Rink event in October in order to raise money to fight breast cancer and help these women.
The IU Health Olcott Center’s mission is to bring assistance and cost-free education to cancer patients throughout Bloomington. The dedicated staff at the center provide many services to those fighting cancer, including one-on-one counseling with oncology certified nurses, annual skin cancer and screening campaigns, and medical massages during cancer treatments.
Wanda Katinszky, Oncology Service Line Director for IU Health Bloomington, said that the center serves as a resource for cancer patients in order to help them adapt to living with the disease.
“We do not ‘treat’ patients. We educate about cancer prevention, early detection and treatment,” Katinszky said. “We help cancer patients ‘navigate’ the health care system and access various supportive care such as prosthesis fitting, wig fitting, support groups, genetic testing, as examples.”
Clinical Educator Terri Acton has worked with women and men fighting cancer at the IU Health Olcott Center since January 2010. She emphasized how much the center motivates her to make a difference in the lives of those with cancer.
“Shortly after that I was told there was an opening for a navigator, I knew this was where I was supposed to be,” Acton said. “I accepted the position and moved to Bloomington and feel blessed that every day I can make a difference for patients and families going through this journey.”
Last year, IU Hockey raised over $1,000 at the first ever Pink the Rink event in a 5-2 victory over the Ball State University Cardinals. The team is excited to work with the IU Health Olcott Center and Bloomington Hospital Foundation for the second annual Pink the Rink event to raise as much money as possible to keep these services free for patients in our local community.
