IU Looks to Start Second Semester on Winning Foot
With the calender turning to 2015, most take this opportunity to set reseloutions to start new and build better habits and accomplish set goals for the new year, and the Hoosiers are no different.
The #1 goal Indiana will have as they enter the home stretch of the 2014-2015 season will be to have a stronger finish then in 2013-2014.
Last year when 2014 came, the Hoosiers struggled and fell apart down the stretch. The team lost 6 of their first 7 games to begin the new year.
This year's home stretch won't be an easy one for the Hoosiers, who will see the #11, #13, #14 teams in the North region as well two Division 2 teams, one of which will be DePaul who they will see as their first opponent of 2015 Friday night.
Last year, DePaul finished #5 in their region qualifitying for the regional tournament, where they would drop the contest to Michigan ending their season.
This season has been a complelely different story for the Blue Demons.
DePaul currently sits at a 2-11 record, and had to wait until mid November to pick up their first win. Both of their wins this season have came against RMU's Maroon team.
Last year the Blue Demons finished #5 in the Central Region for Division 2, but they lost 9 seniors and have picked up 15 new players in what is clearly a rebuilding mode for the program.
After facing off with DePaul Friday night, Indiana will move to the outdoors for Saturday afternoon's contest with Big Ten rival Northwestern.
Indiana and Northwestern will face off in the annual ACHA College Gameday at the Winter Frost Face-Off at MB Financial Park in Rosemont, IL.
Brutally cold weather has swept its way through Chicago all week, with temperatures in the single digits. However, thankfully, temperatures are supposed to "warm" up before Saturday's outdoor matchup.
Current weather forecasts call for temperature at about 15 degrees and slight wind, with just a 10% chance of snow.
A slight wind can just as easily turn into heavy gusts and bring wind chills down to the single digits. After all it is the Windy City. The weather could very well play a big role on Saturday's game.
Don't want to bare the cold to watch Saturday's game? Fortunatley 200x85, the group who puts together the Winter Frost Face-Off, offers an online web feed of the game. Unfortunatley, there is no sound. Here is the link to catch all the action: http://www.rosemont.com/mbfinancialpark/park-info/live-camera/
What to Watch For
The Hoosiers dropped their last contest in an OT thriller to Illinois, who was also a Division 2 opponent. The OT loss dropped IU to .500% on the season at 8-8-2. The new year however will give Indiana the opportunity to finish with their first ever above .500% season, an opportunity they surely will set their eyes on. Some Hoosiers are also closing in on some program All-Time and Single-Season records, and will look to close ground this weekend. Captain Nick Kleva can pick up the single-season record for assists in a season with a pair of assists this weekend. Alternate Captain Tyler Christensen can also move into the Top 5 in assists in a single season with three this weekend.
DePaul Blue Demons
DePaul comes into this weekend having split their last weekend series to RMU's Maroon team to finish 2014. RMU remains the only team that DePaul has beaten this season, as they also defeated them in the ACHA Showcase to pick up their first win of the season back in November. DePaul's struggles this season can be credited to losing 9 seniors last year and having 15 new players on this year's roster. The big struggle for the Blue Demons this year has been lighting the lamp, as they have been scoring just 2.77 goals a game, while allowing 5.85. The leading scorer for DePaul is #23 Nick Oliver, who has 5G and 9A for 14P in 13GP.
Northwestern comes into Saturday's afternoon matchup with IU after a sweep of Dordt College in December to finish their 2014 campaign. The Wildcats are currently 10-8, and are just on the outside of the Pacific rankings. The only similar opponent the two teams have faced is NIU, who both teams beat. The Wildcats are currently scoring 4.6 goals per game, while allowing just 4. Their leading scorer is Rick Gattone who has 19G, 10A, for 29P in 18GP.
This is the first time Indiana will play DePaul or Northwestern as a Division 3 program.
