Hoosiers Ready For Home Opener
By: Maggie Coates
After splitting their opening weekend, the Hoosiers are ready to bounce back as they take on Ball State this Friday and Saturday in their home opener.
Last Friday, the Hoosiers fell short late to the McKendree Bearcats in in a 6-4 loss. After getting the first-game jitters out of the way, the team was able to recoup against the Bearcats the next day, picking up a 5-1 win.
Last year the Hoosiers swept the Cardinals, with scores of 7-5 and 11-2 at Ball State. With the momentum from their win last Saturday and a successful series from last year, IU is getting excited to take on Ball State again.
This Friday will be the Hoosiers’ first ever game played in the new ICHC conference. The team will play two conference games against each team in the ICHC, which includes Ball State, IPFW and Purdue.
To go along with the excitement on the ice, this Friday will be the 1st annual “Pink the Rink” game. The team has worked with Collegiate Charities and Dropping the Puck on Cancer to make this game exciting on and off the ice. Not only will Friday’s game be our Hoosiers’ home opener, it will also honor and support our breast cancer survivors. Proceeds from the event will go towards raising funds and awareness for Breast Cancer.
Although the battle on the ice against Ball State is important to the Hoosiers, they find the thousands of people who fight Breast Cancer on a daily basis and those who have beaten Breast Cancer to be even more important.
Tickets are available online for $7 and will be $10 at the door. Doors will be open at 5PM and the game will begin at 6 PM on Friday.
What to Watch For
Leading the Hoosiers last weekend with three goals each were Nick Kleva and Tyler Christensen. Goalies Ben Seinfeld and Justin Madigan saved 31/32 and 30/35 goals shot against them. If these guys, as well as the rest of the team, can repeat that again this weekend, the Hoosiers should have no problem picking up another sweep over conference rival Ball State.
Ball State Cardinals
The Ball State Cardinals are 0-1 as they lost their season opener 4-3 in a shoot out against Notre Dame last week. The Hoosiers are hoping for a similar, if not better, situation this weekend. With the Cardinals being on the road this weekend, the Hoosiers are hoping to use home ice to their advantage and rally off the energy of their home crowd.
The Hoosiers lead the all time series 2-0.
